How much should carpet underlay cost?

Just paid for a luxurious new carpet? Or bought high-quality wood flooring for your home? Underlay may seem like an unnecessary extra. After all, the last thing you want right now is more expense. But it’s important to consider the benefits this ‘extra’ can provide. It’s an essential long-term investment and, as long as you shop wisely, the cost of carpet underlay shouldn’t break the bank.

What is the average price of underlay?

The price of carpet underlay is calculated per m² and – dependent on the supplier and the quality of the product – you can expect to pay anywhere between £2-£8. The more luxurious the underlay, and the better its overall performance, the more it will cost. However, products around the £5 mark are typically recommended and there’s no real need to spend any more than that.

For example, one of our best (and most popular!) products is the Plushwalk 12mm Carpet Underlay. This demonstrates excellent acoustic and thermal insulation properties. Thanks to its memory foam construction, it improves underfoot comfort. It significantly enhances the look and feel of your flooring. Yet, it’s available for just £6 per m².

What about the extras?

A few extras – such as carpet grippers, adhesive and tape – will be required to install your new carpet underlay correctly. If you have these already, great, no need to worry. But if you don’t, be sure to shop around, as they shouldn’t add too much to the overall cost of the carpet underlay.

To give you an idea of an appropriate price, we currently stock high-quality carpet grippers for £30 or less and it’s possible to purchase our adhesive and tape for around £20 in total.

Delivery charges

Carpet underlay may be a big and heavy product, but that doesn’t mean you should pay over the odds for delivery. Before you checkout, double-check how much you’re being charged. Most suppliers – ourselves included – will add the cost of delivery at the end. But others incorporate it into the cost of the carpet underlay; so just be wary of this and make sure you’re getting a good deal.

Here at the Carpet Underlay Shop, we currently offer an economy 2-3 day service from just £9.95. The bigger the order, the more you will have to pay – and we charge slightly more for next day delivery. But our prices are very fair and the delivery will never cost more than £44.95.

Installation fees

Paying a professional to do the fitting will, of course, add to the overall cost of your carpet underlay. But there’s nothing to say you can’t fit it yourself. Underlay is designed with easy installation in mind and, even for a DIY novice, it’s simple enough to lay without help.
