How much underlay do I need?

This is a question we hear time and time again at the Carpet Underlay Shop. Flooring depends on different room sizes, shapes, and layouts, so it’s important to get your carpet measurements right to make sure it fits into the desired area.

That’s why, to make your life a little easier, we’ve created a handy flooring calculator. This tool will do all the hard work for you, ensuring you order the perfect amount of underlay and flooring for your project.

And the best bit? Once you’ve hit ‘calculate’, as a small thank you from us, you’ll be entitled to 2% off your next order!

How to use our carpet calculator:

The floor calculator is quick, easy, and intuitive to use. Just input your room dimensions – entering the length and width in feet or metres – and it will tell you exactly how much underlay you need. No manual calculations necessary!

You can use it as a carpet, wood, or laminate calculator for different flooring types, or as an underlay calculator. This will help you work out how much you’ll need for your measurements, so you don’t order too much or too little material.

Our carpet underlay calculator also allows you to estimate the total cost of your new flooring. To assess the affordability of different products and choose one that fits your personal budget, simply browse the range of styles we stock and multiply the price per metre by the room area (in square metres).

Please note: It’s typically recommended to add 10% to your measurements to account for any installation errors!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much flooring I need?

Whether you need to calculate the required coverage for carpet, wood, or laminate flooring or underlay, or even underfloor heating, our online flooring calculator can do the calculations for you.

You just need to know the length and width of the room, in either feet or metres. Type these numbers into the relevant boxes above, making sure you select the correct unit, and click the ‘calculate’ button.

The carpet calculator will then generate measurements in different units, including:

  • The area of the space in square feet (ft2) and square metres (m2)
  • The total length of gripper rods you will need in feet and metres

To account for any waste during the installation process, we always recommend adding 10% to these measurements.

Unfortunately, this can’t be done using our online flooring calculator, but it’s pretty easy to work it out yourself. Simply multiply each of the measurements above by 1.10 to get the desired total.

Similarly, you can multiply the cost of a product by the room measurements to see how much it costs to cover the floor.

All of our underlay products are measured and priced per m2 – using these measurements, it’s easy to work out how much carpet underlay you will need and approximately how much it will cost.

How do you work out a room area in m2?

In order to calculate the size of a regular-shaped room or space in square metres, you simply multiply the length of the space (in metres) by the width of the space (in metres).

If maths isn’t your strong point, the easiest option is to use our carpet underlay calculator above. Simply fill in the room size details, click ‘calculate’, and it will do the work for you – generating accurate carpet measurements in both mand ft2.

This works for regular shapes like squares, rectangles, and triangles. If you’re calculating flooring to cover irregular areas, such as stairs or awkwardly shaped rooms, you may need to break them down into smaller shapes. This will allow you to calculate the areas individually, then add them together to get your total.

It’s important to make sure that you measure the space as accurately as possible before inputting the dimensions. If you account for the layout, including doorways, recesses, or protrusions, this can help you reduce the amount of waste by providing the closest possible coverage estimate.

How many packs of wood, laminate, or carpet underlay do I need?

Our flooring calculator can be used to calculate the surface area of a room, which tells you how much carpet underlay you need, in terms of feet or metres. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you how many packs you will need to buy.

This will depend on the specific type of underlay you have chosen and the amount of underlay in each pack.

For example, one of our most popular products – the Plushwalk 12mm Carpet Underlay – comes in mini rolls of 5m2, half rolls containing 7.5m2, and full rolls containing 15.07m2 of underlay.

To work out how many boxes or rolls you need, you would have to divide the total surface area of your room (e.g. 100m2) by 15.07 and round up to the nearest mini, half, or full roll.

As 100 ÷15.07 = 6.6, you would need 7 full rolls of this type of underlay to cover the required area.

What does carpet underlay do for flooring?

Carpet underlay should never be seen as an optional extra – it’s essential. Not only does it enhance the look and feel of your new flooring, but it also improves the level of underfoot comfort.

It acts as a shock absorber, protecting the carpet from daily wear and tear and extending its lifespan by up to 50%. On top of this, flooring underlay demonstrates excellent sound and thermal insulation properties.

If you’re ready to buy underlay for your new flooring, take the first step today, and use our carpet measurement calculator to work out how much you need before placing your order online.

How long does carpet underlay last?

In theory, high-quality carpet underlay can last for up to 25 years – but the older it gets, the less effective it becomes. It can harbour dust and dirt, and may start to show signs of wear and tear that can affect the overall finish of the carpet.

With this in mind, it’s a good idea to invest in new underlay each time you replace your carpet or laminate flooring.

To help enhance your new flooring with new underlay, find out exactly how much you need using our carpet calculator!

Is carpet underlay easy to install?

Yes, absolutely. Even if you have no previous experience in this area, most new carpet underlays are relatively easy to fit – especially if you use the right tools and follow appropriate guidance.

For example, to ensure the installation runs smoothly, it’s important to make sure you have enough carpet underlay for the job. This can be achieved by carefully measuring the room and using the accurate flooring calculator above to work out the total surface area that needs underlay coverage.

Preparation is often the key to success. So, before you get started, gather all the necessary installation equipment (e.g., tape measure, utility knife, adhesive, tape, etc.) and clean and tidy the subfloor.

When you’re ready to start the actual installation, we recommend checking out our beginner’s guide on ‘how to lay carpet underlay’. This will guide you step-by-step through the process, offering useful advice on how to achieve the best results.
