Benefits of Cloud 9 Underlay
Sometimes known as Cloud Nine carpet underlay, this product is manufactured using high-quality PU foam and recycled materials, making it environmentally friendly as well as robust and comfortable. Made by manufacturers, Ball & Young Ltd, it’s of good quality and complies with all UK safety standards.
Walking on this high-density underlay delivers a luxury feel underfoot, whichever level of firmness you choose. Plus, it provides excellent warmth, and can also offer sound insulation to help reduce impact and airborne noise.
Thanks to its unique properties, Cloud 9 carpet underlay was deemed the best carpet underlay from 2008 to 2016. Since then, the industry has advanced, and in many cases, we would now recommend the market-leading Plushwalk 12mm Underlay instead.
Plushwalk 12mm is made incorporating enhanced ‘bounce-back’ memory foam, offering a 3.5 TOG rating, 49dB sound reduction, and astonishing levels of underfoot comfort.
So, if you used Cloud 9 for your initial carpet installation, why not consider Plushwalk for your next one?
It’s important to bear in mind, though, that Cloud 9 underlay is a cheaper alternative – starting from just £4.59 per m2 compared to £6.99 per m2 for Plushwalk. Any type can improve the look and feel of your floors, and for business or house refurbishment projects on a budget, it certainly ticks all the right boxes.
Which Cloud 9 foam underlay is the most popular?
There are a variety of different styles and thicknesses available, but two of the most popular in our range include:
Cloud 9 Cirrus Underlay
Suitable for use in all rooms of the home, Cloud 9 Cirrus Underlay has a 9mm thick construction, good thermal and sound reduction properties, and a high comfort rating of 4.
Featuring a printed stitch paper topping to prevent over-stretching, this PU foam carpet underlay is durable enough for use in busy high-traffic areas, including stairs and hallways.
Cloud 9 Cumulus Underlay
Designed with quality and comfort in mind, Cloud 9 Cumulus Underlay is very similar. The main difference is that it’s made with slightly thicker mixed foam (11mm rather than 9mm).
As a result, it has a much higher TOG rating of 3.1 and successfully reduces impact noise by up to 43dB (compared to 2.6 TOG and 39dB, respectively). This is why it’s one of the most highly regarded products in the range.

According to the manufacturer’s guarantee, Cloud 9 is guaranteed to last the lifetime of the flooring you install it underneath. It typically lasts for up to 20 years, and should be replaced when you replace your flooring.
The guarantee only applies if you install the underlay in the areas recommended by the manufacturer, using their recommended installation method. You can check this information in the product description before you place an order.
It’s also important to remember that while these are high-performance, luxury underlays, their lifespan will depend on the environment they are installed in and how well the flooring is maintained over time.
The right Cloud 9 carpet underlay for you depends on factors such as where you want to install it, the amount of foot traffic it will experience, and the level of comfort and firmness you would prefer when walking over it.
For example, if you need contract flooring underlay, Cloud 9 Super Contract is an affordable luxury option, while Cloud 9 Connoisseur has a firmer feel – but for higher-traffic areas, heavy-duty Cloud 9 Silver Lining may be a better investment.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a luxury domestic underlay, the frontrunners are Cloud 9 Cumulus and Cloud 9 Cirrus.
However, if you want to go the extra mile, Cloud 9 Caviar & Crystal comes with antimicrobial technology that helps to protect carpet installations against bacteria and fungi. Meanwhile, Cloud 9 Charleston is great for withstanding furniture.
There are also options designed to suit specific purposes, such as Cloud 9 Cush N Wood for wood laminate floors, Cloud 9 Radiance for underfloor heating systems, and Cloud 9 Flame Retardant 8 for fire resistance.

Not sure how much carpet underlay to buy? Finding the ideal amount for the floor coverage you need is easy.
At Carpet Underlay Shop, we have created a helpful Carpet & Laminate Flooring Calculator to help our customers figure out the right amount of flooring and underlay to order.
All you have to do is measure the area carefully, then enter the length and width into the calculator in either feet or metres. Hit the calculate button, and it will generate the area in square feet and square metres, plus the gripper length you would need.
We sell underlay rolls priced by square metre, so once you know the area, you can check how many you would need to cover this space and add the fitting number of rolls to your basket – remembering to add an extra 10% in case of errors.
Checking the Cloud 9 underlay price per metre will also help you calculate how much it will cost to cover the floor.
