FAQs

How do I calculate how much flooring I need?

Our flooring calculator is really easy to use. You just need to know the length and width of the room, in either feet or meters. Type these numbers into the relevant boxes above and click ‘calculate’. The carpet calculator will then generate a number of measurements, including:

  • the area of the space in square feet (ft2) and square metres (m2)
  • the amount of gripper you will need in feet and metres

To account for any errors during the installation process, we always recommend adding 10% to these measurements. Unfortunately, this can’t be done using our online flooring calculator. But it’s pretty easy to work out yourself. Simply multiply each of the measurements above by 1.10 to get the desired total.

All of our underlay products are measured and priced per m2 and, using these measurements, it’s easy to work out how much carpet underlay you will need – and approximately how much it costs.

How do you work out m2?

In order to calculate the size of a room or space in m2, you simply multiply the length of the space (in metres) by the width of the space (in metres). But if maths isn’t your strong point, the easiest option is to use our carpet underlay calculator. Simply fill in the details, click ‘calculate’ and it will do the hard work for you – generating accurate carpet measurements in both m2 and ft2.

How many packs of underlay do I need?

Our flooring calculator can be used to calculate the surface area of a room. This tells you how much carpet underlay you need, in terms of feet or metres. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you how many packs you will need to buy. This depends on the specific underlay you have chosen and the amount of underlay in each pack.

For example, one of our most popular products – the Plushwalk 12mm Carpet Underlay – comes in half rolls containing 7.5m2 and full rolls containing 15.07m2 of underlay. To work out how many you need, divide the total surface area of your room (e.g. 100m2) by 15.07 and round up to the nearest half or full roll.

 i.e. 100 ÷15.07 = 6.6 – therefore 7 full rolls would be required.

What does carpet underlay do?

Carpet underlay should not be seen as an optional extra – it’s essential. Not only does it enhance the look and feel of your new flooring, it also improves the level of underfoot comfort. It acts as a shock absorber, protecting the carpet from daily wear and tear and extending its lifespan by up to 50%. On top of this, it demonstrates excellent sound and thermal insulation properties.

If you’re ready to invest in underlay for your new flooring, take the first step today, and use our carpet measurement calculator to work out how much you need.

How long does carpet underlay last?

In theory, high-quality carpet underlay can last for up to 25 years – but the older it gets, the less effective it becomes. It can harbour dust and dirt. It may start to show signs of wear and tear and can affect the overall finish of the carpet. With this in mind, it’s usually a good idea to invest in new underlay each time you replace your carpet or laminate.

Find out exactly how much carpet underlay you need using our handy carpet calculator!

Is carpet underlay easy to install?

Yes, absolutely. Even if you have no previous experience in this area, most new carpet underlays are relatively easy to fit – especially if you use the right tools and guidance.

For example, to ensure the installation runs smoothly, it’s important to make sure you have enough carpet underlay for the job. This can be achieved by carefully measuring the room and using the accurate flooring calculator above to work out the total surface area.

Preparation is often the key to success. So, before you start, gather all the necessary equipment (i.e. tape measure, utility knife, adhesive, tape etc.) and clean and tidy the subfloor. Then, when you’re ready to start the actual installation, we recommend checking out our beginner’s guide on ‘how to lay carpet underlay’. This will guide you step-by-step through the process and offers lots of useful tips and advice on how to achieve the best results.
