How long does LVT flooring last?

Home renovations can be time-consuming and expensive. They certainly require a lot of effort! And if you’re putting in the hard work, of course, you want the results to last.

That’s why, LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles) is becoming an increasingly popular option.

Designed to mimic the look and feel of real wood, not only does it have an attractive modern appearance, it’s also incredibly tough and hard-wearing. Here we take a look at the average lifespan of LVT flooring and why it should be the no.1 choice when durability is a priority.

Long-lasting luxury vinyl flooring

The average lifespan of LVT is around 25-30 years.

It may sound surprising, but it’s true. Due to its clever four-layer construction – including a top ‘wear’ layer – luxury vinyl flooring is built to stand the test of time and is a great option for both busy households and commercial-based properties.

The exact length of time it will last depends on several factors, including the level of daily foot traffic, how well it is maintained and more. But here at Carpet Underlay Shop, we’re so sure of its durability, we offer a 25 year warranty on all products in our LVT range.

To maximise the longevity of your luxury vinyl tiles, there are several factors you should take into consideration – both before and after your purchase. These include:

 1. Quality

Generally speaking, cheaper products tend to be of lower quality, and may start to show signs of wear and tear very quickly. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. The key is to look for LVT with a thick ‘wear’ layer, ideally 0.5mm or more – as this will successfully protect your flooring from scratches, scuffs, and other day-to-day damage.

2. Underlay

Best underlay for LVT flooring

Installing a high-quality underlay is one of the best ways to protect your LVT flooring and maximise its lifespan. Not only will the extra layer improve stability, it acts as a fantastic shock absorber – therefore reducing the likelihood of impact damage – and offers excellent moisture protection.

Here at Carpet Underlay Shop, we currently recommend Royale® LVT Acoustic. This is one of the very best products in the industry. Made from toughened foam and silver foil, it boasts a range of useful features and is available for the affordable price of just £3.60 per m2.

3. Installation

To get the most out of your LVT, it needs to be installed correctly. The subfloor should be as smooth and level as possible and any surface dirt or debris removed. The flooring must be acclimatised first. Then, when it comes to laying, you should leave a sufficient extension gap and ensure each tile is carefully lowered and connected in place.

Thankfully, LVT is one of the easiest types of flooring to fit – particularly if it has a ‘click and lock’ system. Even if you’re a DIY amateur, you should be able to install it yourself without any issues.

4. Maintenance

Simple things, such as not mopping up spillages and using too much water whilst cleaning, can significantly reduce the lifespan of your luxury vinyl flooring. That’s why, it’s important to take good care of it and maintain it properly.

Our advice is to use a soft-bristle brush or vacuum to pick up loose dirt. The surface can be gently wiped using a flat-headed spray or microfibre mop. And to restore shine, a warm water and vinegar solution can make a big difference. Just make sure the mop is only very slightly damp!

As part of our online flooring range, we currently stock LVT flooring by Royale® – a brand known for its outstanding quality and attractive contemporary designs.

We have three popular colourways to choose from, including Rhino Grey, White Cliffs, and Fawn Fox. Priced at just £24.99 per m2, it’s an affordable option for most renovation projects and offers many benefits. Detailed information on these can be found in our previous blog. But crucially, with a ‘wear’ layer measuring 0.55mm, it’s tough, durable and guaranteed to last a long time!
