Which is the best flooring for each room of the home?

Want to buy new flooring for your home, but not sure where to start?

With so many flooring options to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming. But ultimately, to decide on the right option for you, there are three main factors that you will need to consider:

  1. Which room will the flooring be laid in?
  2. What is that room used for?
  3. How much daily footfall does it experience?

Here we offer our advice on the best flooring type for each room in the traditional family abode.

Hallway

The hallway is (by far!) the busiest area of the home. After all, it’s the entrance into your property – and, therefore, whatever flooring option you choose needs to be hard-wearing and low maintenance. But it’s also the first thing guests see when they visit, so it should be stylish too.

Our suggestion – here at Carpet Underlay Shop – is entrance matting.

This is one of the most durable flooring options currently available. Thanks to its ribbed polypropylene pile, it prevents dirt and moisture from treading into the property (thus protecting the floor coverings inside). It’s incredibly easy to clean and maintain. But at the same time, it comes in a diverse range of modern colours, and creates a smart and contemporary finish.

Kitchen and dining room

Often regarded as the heart of the home, the kitchen-dining area is also very busy. This is the place where you cook, eat and gather as a family. A room prone to wear and tear. And, as such, it’s important to choose flooring that both looks great and can stand up to those daily demands.

In our opinion, you can’t go wrong with Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT).

LVT has become a very popular flooring option amongst homeowners – and it’s easy to understand why. Designed to mimic the look and texture of real wood, it adds a touch of luxury to the property. But it’s actually made from vinyl and boasts a wide range of additional benefits. For example, it’s tough and long-lasting, resistant to stains and scratches, fully-waterproof, and easy to install and maintain. In many ways, the perfect floor covering for the hustle and bustle of a family kitchen.

Lounge and bedroom

Living areas and bedrooms are, primarily, used for rest and relaxation – and they typically receive less daily footfall than the rest of the house. Therefore, when choosing a suitable flooring option, you can afford to go for something warm and cosy (and a little more on the plush side!).

Of course, carpet fits this bill nicely; particularly if it’s accompanied by a high-quality underlay, such as the Plushwalk 12mm Carpet Underlay. Regarded as the best underlay currently on the market, this creates an incredibly soft and comfortable feel underfoot, offers excellent insulation and reduces airborne and impact noise by 49dB. Combined with a high-quality wool carpet, it’s exactly what you need to ensure your lounge and bedrooms are as restful and homely as possible.

Bathroom

By their very nature, bathrooms get wet and steamy on a day-to-day basis – often several times a day, when different members of the household take a bath or shower. As such, it’s crucial that you choose a flooring that is waterproof, slip-resistant and easy to clean and mop regularly.

Our recommendation is vinyl.

This comes in a range of stylish ‘wood’ designs (e.g. grey oak) and looks the part in a modern home bathroom. But unlike real wood, it’s safe to use in wet conditions and will prevent any slips and falls. It’s also incredibly easy to lay and will not move or disfigure when exposed to moisture or water.
