Laminate Flooring Underlay

About to install new hardwood or laminate? Be sure to buy laminate underlay.

Many people believe that underlay isn’t necessary for this particular type of flooring. But, if you wish to create the best possible finish, it’s a highly worthwhile investment – that offers a wide range of advantages.

Here at Carpet Underlay Shop, we stock several underlays that are specifically designed for use with wooden or laminate flooring. Most are appropriate for both domestic and commercial use. However, the best one for you will depend on where you wish to install the laminate underlay and what you would like it to achieve (e.g. improve underfoot comfort, add thermal protection etc.).

Several leading brands are currently available within this range, including Royale, Duralay, Cloud 9, Novostrat and Roberts, to name just a few. We also stock a comprehensive selection of wood and laminate accessories. So, whatever your laminate underlay needs, we have the solution.

Why do I need laminate flooring underlay?

Laminate and wood underlay has many benefits. First and foremost, it can help to correct an uneven subfloor – smoothing out any imperfections and creating the perfect surface for laying your wood or laminate. This can help to both simplify and speed up the installation process.

It will enhance the overall look, feel and performance of your flooring. By adding an extra layer between the laminate and subfloor, laminate underlay helps to improve underfoot comfort and limits the transfer of sound and heat between various levels of the building. Rooms will become warmer for longer and both impact and airborne noises will be significantly reduced.

Laminate flooring underlay also prevents moisture and damp build-up. It protects the wood or laminate from everyday wear and tear and can extend its lifespan by up to 50%.

Which is the best underlay for laminate?

For most projects, our recommendation is Royale 7mm Professional Sonic Gold.

Regarded as the ‘gold standard’, this is widely used by professionals and homeowners alike.

Made from a unique high-density foam, it’s a superior laminate underlay with an impressive range of qualities. Not only does it level out most subfloor imperfections, it offers ultimate levels of sound insulation (reducing impact and airborne noise by up to 37dB), has an excellent TOG rating of 1.0 and greatly enhances underfoot comfort. Yet it’s available for the fantastic price of £7.98 per m2.

Of course, in some circumstances, an alternative product may be more suitable. For example, Royale 7mm Fibreboard is more appropriate for plywood subfloors, and Thermo Pro X is ideal for use with underfloor heating.

More information to help you pinpoint the ideal product can be found in our blog. But for most projects, it’s safe to assume that Royale Professional 7mm is the best option.

How much does laminate flooring underlay cost?

This depends on the specific laminate flooring underlay chosen and the quantity required.

Budget-friendly products are available from just 86p per m2; perfect if you require a simple but protective layer. Whilst at the top end of the scale, you can find underlays for £8+ per m2.

For the best value for money, we highly recommend Royale 7mm Professional Sonic Gold. Available for just £7.98 per m2, this is an affordable yet highly impressive wood/laminate underlay, that will significantly improve the final results of your flooring – without breaking the bank in the process.

Regardless of which product you choose, you can rest assured that our prices are highly competitive. We always keep delivery charges to an absolute minimum, with an economy 2-3 day service available on all orders (starting from just £4.95). We also provide discounts and offers whenever possible.

When you shop with us, you’re guaranteed the best products at the best prices.

Is laminate underlay easy to lay?

Absolutely. All underlays for laminate flooring are designed with easy installation in mind. With the right tools and a little expert guidance, you can have it successfully fitted in no time.

The exact method required will depend on the specific type of underlay you’ve purchased.

Detailed instructions for each of these methods can be found in our blog, so it’s worth taking a look before you start. Across the board, the key is to prepare well. Read our step-by-step guides. Get to grips with the full process. Then, when it comes to the actual fitting, remember to take your time.

Laying laminate underlay yourself is much cheaper than hiring a professional fitter. And even for a DIY amateur, it’s easy to achieve great results – so where’s the harm in giving it a go?

How much laminate underlay do I need?

Rooms come in all different shapes and sizes. To ensure you have enough laminate underlay for your project, it’s important to measure carefully and calculate the size of your space in square metres.

To make life a little easier, we’ve created a handy flooring calculator. Just pop in the length and width of the room, and it will tell you exactly how much underlay you require. The exact number of packs you need will depend on the underlay chosen and the amount of underlay in each pack.

It’s always better to order a little extra – just to account for any errors or unexpected issues. That’s why we only sell our laminate flooring underlays in full and half rolls (rather than by the square metre). And we recommend adding an extra 10% to your total amount.
