Laminate Underlay for Underfloor Heating
Underlay is important to protect and preserve the lifespan of your flooring. Without underlay, your flooring will take the full impact of people walking on it, which will break down your flooring finish over time – and possibly the structure itself.
That’s why it’s vital to invest in durable wood or laminate underlay for underfloor heating. Made to be as thin and lightweight as possible, they also have a low TOG rating (of 1 TOG or less), allowing the heating system to work at an optimum level.
When you install laminate flooring underlay for underfloor heating over the subfloor before you lay your flooring on top, this specially manufactured insulation layer can provide several benefits for your flooring and underfloor heating system:
- With a low thermal resistance, the material helps warmth to spread efficiently, keeping heating costs down.
- The extra layer adds cushioning, increasing comfort underfoot for a smooth and quiet walking experience.
- It also improves durability, helping your flooring to withstand heavy foot traffic and furnishings over time.
Underfloor heating systems are a luxurious feature for modern homes and businesses, so if you want to get the most out of your flooring and heating, then choosing a suitable underlay is highly advised – and we have just what you need in our online shop!
What’s the best underfloor heating underlay for laminate wood flooring?
Selecting the right underfloor heating underlay for engineered wood floors or laminate flooring can seem overwhelming at first, but we’re here to make it easier for you with our range of high-quality products. This includes rubber underlay and foam underlay options that are designed to be suitable for use with underfloor heating.
Rubber Underlay for Laminate, Wood, or Vinyl Flooring
If you would prefer underlay made of rubber, then check out our Duralay Heatflow Laminate Underlay. The high-density sponge rubber provides excellent support, protection, and sound impact reduction. This makes it a great choice for busy homes, such as apartments, or commercial applications with heavy foot traffic.
Please note, however, that this underlay is not meant for use with electric or dry underfloor heating systems. Only purchase this if you will be using it with a wet underfloor heating system.
Polyethylene Foam Underlay for Laminate, Wood, or Vinyl Floors
We have several foam options, too, including the Arbiton Thermo Thermal 3 in 1 Underlay. This polyurethane foam underlay has an integrated vapour barrier, as well as acoustic and thermal properties. However, it isn’t compatible with luxury vinyl tiles (LVT).
For vinyl underlay that can be used with underfloor heating, take a look at the SoundClick Vinyl Click Flooring Underlay instead, which is made from closed-cell polyolefin foam.
For most subfloor insulation projects, we would typically suggest installing Thermo Pro X. In our knowledgeable opinion, this PE dense foam product is currently the best underfloor heating underlay for engineered wood and laminate flooring.
Specifically designed to allow maximum heat transfer, it boasts a range of innovative features and benefits, including:
- An extremely low TOG rating of 0.3 to transfer warmth efficiently
- A unique punched-hole design to promote air circulation
- Fantastic acoustic properties (up to 21dB sound reduction)
- Increasing the lifetime of your flooring (by up to 30% in some cases)
Affordable and effective, this vinyl underfloor heating underlay is the go-to choice for all home-based and commercial jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions
While both types of underlay are compatible with underfloor heating, different levels of insulation will be required due to the different thicknesses of laminate and wood flooring materials compared to carpet.
While carpet usually has a higher comfort rating due to its plush softness, to enable warmth to transfer effectively, the underlay must be thinner – with the total TOG rating of the underlay and carpet not exceeding 2.5 TOG.
Our carpet underlay for underfloor heating is therefore designed for use with carpets, and not for use with vinyl or wood flooring.
Underlay for heating systems under laminate, vinyl, or wood floors is designed slightly differently to ensure the most efficient transfer of heat for these thinner flooring materials.
Reducing noise is also more important, as foot traffic and sound transfer will be louder on hard floors without cushioning.
If you need more details or help with choosing underlay to suit your flooring, don’t hesitate to talk to our team.
Underlay is available in various thicknesses, so it’s important to choose the right one for your flooring type and underfloor heating type. If the underlay isn’t suitable, you won’t be getting the most value for money from your underfloor heating, as you’ll need to pay more to heat the room and may experience issues with noise.
Whether you’re using wood or laminate flooring for underfloor electric heating, forced air underfloor heating, or hydronic underfloor heating (which uses hot water instead of warm air), it’s essential to check the underlay is compatible before ordering.
More detailed information about this can usually be found in the product description, along with easy installation tips.
In all cases, you should opt for a thinner, low TOG underlay with underfloor heating, but for laminate or wood flooring, we would recommend a thickness of no more than 1.5–2.75mm and a TOG rating of around 0.3.
To help our customers find out how much flooring underlay they need for their room size, we have a handy online tool available. Use our Carpet & Laminate Flooring Calculator today to work out a suitable amount of underlay for your room!
To use this floor measurement calculator, you must first measure the width and length of the room at its largest points. Take these measurements, in either metres or feet, and input them into the calculator to generate the area.
It will then tell you how much flooring and/or underlay you will need in square metres and square feet.
Our wood, vinyl, and laminate underlay for underfloor heating is supplied in full rolls, with the price shown per square metre. Multiplying this price by the area will reveal how much you can expect to pay to cover the floor.
When calculating and ordering flooring or underlay, remember to always add 10% in case of errors during installation.
