Frequently Asked Questions
If you want to get the most out of your new flooring, installing door threshold strips and carpet trims is highly recommended.
First and foremost, they complete the look, creating a seamless transition from one room or area to the next and ensuring a professional finish.
In addition, fitting carpet metal door strips helps to:
- Secure the flooring in place at the edges
- Reduce the likelihood of lumps, bumps, or wrinkles
- Provide extra protection against damage
- Improve safety by reducing trip hazards
- Cover unsightly frays and cuts along the joins
Available from as little as £4.99 per trim and guaranteed to last for many years, we believe they’re a worthwhile investment for all domestic and commercial flooring projects.
As you’ll see when browsing our collection, we have a wide range of different carpet edge cover strips and flooring join covers for sale. These include:
- Double-edged carpet trims – Featuring grips on both sides of the design, dual-edge trims are perfect for joining carpet-to-carpet thresholds and doorways.
- Single-edged threshold strips – With grips on just one side, these are typically used to join a carpeted room and an area of vinyl or lino flooring.
- Z-section door strips – Ideal for joining carpet to tile, wood, or laminate flooring.
- Carpet strips – Designed to cover a 30mm gap, these join carpet-to-carpet thresholds and create a seamless finish from one carpeted area to the next.
- Vinyl edge strips – Created to connect vinyl floors on either side of a doorway or threshold, with a ramp version available for uneven floor levels.
Extra-wide carpet strips are also available (designed to cover a 61mm gap), and to make installation easier, we even stock a self-adhesive option!
The type of metal door bar or door plate you need to cover floor joins depends on the types of flooring that you’ll be working with.
If you only have carpeted floors, then you’ll need a carpet-to-carpet joining strip for the threshold between them. Similarly, if you only have one type of wood, laminate, or vinyl flooring, you must use metal transition strips that are specifically designed for this purpose.
A double-edged bar is typically preferable for joining carpets, though a single-edged bar can be used to join carpet to a thinner type of flooring. The trim will need grippers for any side that will be installed on a carpet edge, while other flooring types won’t need this feature.
Single-edged trims are usually designed to join floors where there is a lower floor level on one side, which is why they’re suitable for joining carpet to tile or vinyl, for example.
Alternatively, a Z-edge bar can be used to join carpet to hard flooring where there isn’t a significant difference between the flooring levels.
If you still aren’t sure which type of threshold strips you should be looking for, you can always contact us to ask the team at Carpet Underlay Shop for advice!
Installing a carpet edge trim with a tidy and safe finish requires the following steps:
- Measure the doorway or threshold and order a plate in the right length and width. If the area is narrower than the standard sizes available, you’ll need to cut it to size.
- Before you can install the edge trim, you should first remove the door from the frame and prepare the area by cleaning up the subfloor and flooring edges.
- Next, you should place the carpet bar where you want it to sit and mark the subfloor through the openings with a pencil, so you can drill holes in the right places.
- Finally, you can line up the door bar, ensuring the flooring edges on both sides are securely fitted (you may need a knee kicker), and drill the screws into place.
