Wool underlay – treading lightly on the planet

Want to update your home whilst doing your bit for the environment?

Wool underlay is the ideal option.

This particular type of underlayment is making a huge comeback, both in the commercial and domestic sector – and it’s easy to understand why. Despite being a high-performance product, it has very little impact on the planet. And its inherent properties can offer a wide range of benefits.

Here we take a closer look at why it’s a great choice for your next project.

An underlay with fantastic eco-credentials

Here at Carpet Underlay Shop, we currently stock wool underlayment made by Wilsons Underlay – and it’s fair to say, it certainly leads the way in terms of its eco-credentials. The underlay itself is made by upcycling a variety of waste materials, which would otherwise have been headed to the landfill, including:

  • recycled textiles derived from wool
  • synthetic carpet factory offcuts
  • jute

No harmful chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. Yet, it still performs exceptionally well and conforms to UK flame retardancy standards. Unlike PU or rubber, the waste materials used to make the underlay are naturally kind to the environment. And once the underlay reaches the end of its lifespan, it can be recycled again.

It’s a win-win situation. This is a product that offers maximum performance, with minimal environmental impact. So, it’s not surprising that it’s becoming a popular choice.

Other benefits of wool underlayment

Aside from its green credentials, wool carpet underlay has a range of other beneficial qualities:

  • Fantastic thermal insulation

Due to the natural properties of wool, wool underlay is a particularly good option for thermal insulation. It comes in several different weights (ranging from 28-56 OZ) and the thickest has a high TOG rating of 3.6. Long-term, this can help to significantly reduce your energy bills.

  • Effective acoustic insulation

Depending on the thickness chosen, wool carpet underlay can successfully reduce impact and airborne noise by up to 37dB – therefore creating a much quieter environment.

  • Underfoot comfort

Measuring up to 15mm thick, wool felt underlay provides superb levels of underfoot comfort. It has a comfort rating of 3 to 4+ (depending on its thickness); which means, it’s a great choice for areas that require comfort and will make your carpets feel soft, cushioned and luxurious.

  • Hardwearing

Wool underlay is extremely durable. It’s much less likely to crumble (e.g. due to heavy traffic or furniture) and will stay in excellent condition for many years. As such, it’s suitable for both commercial and residential applications and will enhance the look and feel of your carpet.

  • Cost-effective

Despite its outstanding qualities, wool underlay is one of the cheapest underlays available. A square metre starts from just £2.53 (£37.95 per roll). And here at Carpet Underlay Shop, it’s currently discounted further. Just enter the code ‘ENV5’ at checkout to get an extra 5% off.
