Hallway flooring ideas

Fed up with dirty, wet footprints in the hallway?

It’s somewhat inevitable at this time of year.

From soggy paws after morning walkies to muddy boots after your evening walk, it’s the first room you step into when you get home. Add in the unfavourable weather and a consistently high level of footfall, and your hallway flooring can quickly look a little worse for wear – particularly in the winter!

That’s why damage limitation is essential.

As inviting and stylish as a plush cream carpet may be, it’s just not destined for an entranceway. Instead, you need something that can stand up to the barrage of mucky shoes and dripping-wet umbrellas. Something tough, practical and easy to clean – without compromising on style.

Here are our top recommendations.

3 of the best types of flooring for a hallway

Stylish but savvy options.

1. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring

Our no.1 choice for a well-trodden family hallway.

Made from embossed vinyl with a top wear layer, LVT is water-resistant. Which means, unlike real hardwood or laminate flooring, it’s perfect for use in the entrance area of your home – resilient to the effects of any soggy feet and coats, splashes of rainwater or general hallway dampness.

Providing it’s fitted in conjunction with a high-quality LVT underlay, it’s also:

  • impervious to any underlying dampness in the subfloor
  • extremely durable, capable of withstanding high levels of daily foot traffic
  • warm and comfortable underfoot
  • a fantastic acoustic and thermal insulator
  • easy to wipe down and keep clean
  • available in a range of ‘realistic’ shades and patterns

All qualities which make it a practical choice of flooring for a hallway.

Here at Carpet Underlay Shop, we currently stock a range of Royale LVT Click Flooring – available for just £24.99 per m2. This is a quality-approved product; 4.2mm thick with a 0.55mm wear layer (meaning it can be used both domestically and commercially, with a warranty of up to 25 years). And it comes in three popular, on-trend colours – grey, oak and white – to suit most home décors.

To ensure you get the best results, we also stock Royale LVT Vinyl Underlay.

Made from impact-resistant foam with an integrated damp-proof membrane, this successfully bolsters the LVT’s durability – providing extra protection against day-to-day moisture and foot traffic. Whilst also improving its overall performance, particularly in terms of insulation and comfort. Priced at just £3.60 per m2, it’s an affordable and worthwhile addition to your hallway vinyl flooring.

2. Lino roll flooring

Another ideal choice for a busy hallway.

Compared to many other popular types of flooring, lino roll flooring (also known as sheet vinyl) offers excellent levels of water resistance. Just like LVT, this means it’s resilient to the effects of day-to-day hallway moisture – and won’t be affected by the adverse weather of winter months.

It won’t start to curl at the corners due to a few splashes of rainwater. You won’t spot any signs of warping or cracks in the vinyl’s surface due to waterlogged winter boots. And even without the addition of an underlay, you don’t need to worry about rising dampness from the subfloor.

It’s designed to get wet and will last throughout the seasons for many years.

Sheet vinyl is also a savvy choice for a hallway as it is:

  • incredibly durable, capable of withstanding a high level of daily footfall
  • soft and comfortable underfoot
  • easy to keep clean

As part of our online flooring range, we now have a fantastic collection of Grandismo Lino Roll Flooring to choose from. This starts from just £52.60 for a 2m2 roll and comes in a variety of stylish designs, including everything from classic oak and parquet patterns to geometric designs and sleek grey slate. Making it an affordable yet on-trend choice for any hallway flooring refresh.

And the best bit? It’s super easy to install and can be fitted without underlay.

 3. Entrance matting

Not something that most people think of – but a great choice all the same.

This is the only type of carpet that you should ever actually consider for a hallway.

Made from 100% polypropylene, entrance matting is extremely robust and durable – capable of handling heavy-duty footfall with ease and lasting for many years, even in a busy entrance.

Thanks to its distinctive triple-ridged design, it can also cleverly capture any dirt or moisture as you enter the property. Meaning no muddy messes after a winter walk or slippery wet surfaces that will eventually ruin your flooring. Rainwater and dampness will simply dry out and any dirt left behind can be easily vacuumed away – leaving you with a clean carpet and no signs of wear or tear.

Functionality may be one of the main benefits of entrance matting. But it still has a very luxurious appearance, perfect for giving your hallway a modern and impressive look. At present, we stock three on-trend shades – anthracite, light beige and brown. All of which are available in 1m and 2m widths, in a variety of lengths, and start from the affordable price of just £5.15 (for a 0.5x1m piece).

In most cases, it’s also worth pairing entrance matting with a high-quality underlay. Our current recommendation is Plushwalk 12mm.  An award-winning product deemed the best carpet underlay on the market. This is made from high-grade ‘bounce back’ memory foam – which means, it excels in terms of its performance and will significantly enhance the final look and feel of your carpet.
