Can I reuse carpet grippers?

It’s a question we get asked quite a lot, here at Carpet Underlay Shop. If fitting new carpet and carpet underlay, is it OK to reuse the carpet grippers you already have? Or should you replace them?

In our opinion, it’s a no-brainer.

Nine times out of ten, carpet gripper rods should NOT be reused. Ideally, they should be replaced every time you change your flooring. The only exception to this rule is if they’re in a particularly good condition, or if it’s been less than 12 months since they were last swapped out.

You may think it’s just a sales trick. But our in-house experts truly believe that new grippers are essential when fitting a new carpet – and here are some of the main reasons why.

3 reasons to invest in new carpet grippers

1. Easy and accurate installation

Not only are gripper rods very easy to fit (please see our previous blog for a simple step-by-step guide), they can also make the carpet installation process much quicker and easier. Positioned approximately 7-10mm away from the skirting, your new underlay and carpet can be accurately tucked in around the edges of the room and held in place by the nails until you add staples.

What’s more, they make it much easier for the carpet to be taken up and replaced at a later date.

2. Effectiveness

The older that carpet gripper strips get, the less effective they become.

Over time, the sharpness of the nails can start to fade and become slightly blunt. They may also have come loose after many years of holding a carpet. Therefore, they won’t be capable of holding a new thick carpet in place – and it’s always best to replace them with a fresh and sharp gripper.

New gripper rods will provide the level of tension that you require. Featuring two rows of sharp passivated pins, they will keep the carpet securely in place for many years – helping to prevent any unwanted movement or slippages and ensuring your new floor is safe to walk on.

3. Professional finish

Carpet grippers can also significantly enhance the final look of your new flooring.

Fitted around the edge of the room, the rods will keep the fabric taut and create a smooth and professional finish – reducing the likelihood of any wrinkles, ridges and bumps in the carpet.
